Amanpuri

Amanpuri is where the Aman legend began, and nearly four decades on the original still explains the brand better than any brochure. Set in a mature coconut plantation on Phuket's west coast, its Ayutthaya-inspired pavilions and black-tiled main pool cascade down a headland to a private crescent of sand. The geometry is temple-calm, the palette charcoal and gold, and the silence—by Phuket standards—remarkable.

Pavilions are spread through the grove with outdoor salas and total privacy; villas higher on the hill add pools and dedicated staff. Nothing shouts. The pleasure here is in proportion and ritual: morning light through palm trunks, staff who remember everything, the beach club's teak loungers filling slowly by mid-morning. Guests return for decades, and it shows in the unforced ease of the service.

The Holistic Wellness Centre has kept the property current, with diagnostics, Thai therapies and personalised programmes well beyond spa-menu standard. Dining spans excellent Thai, Japanese and Mediterranean rooms, and the resort's fleet of cruisers opens up Phang Nga Bay. Amanpuri costs a small fortune; for its particular serenity, loyalists consider it money well spent.
