Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A thirteenth-century Tuscan villa turned self-sufficient country estate, where farm, garden and spa feed one of the region's most personal luxury stays.
Borgo Santo Pietro began as a medieval healing stop for pilgrims on the route to the nearby abbey of San Galgano, and its modern incarnation keeps faith with that history in an unexpectedly literal way. The estate near Chiusdino now runs as a largely self-sufficient farm—kitchen gardens, vineyards, cheese rooms, beehives and hen houses—supplying the restaurants and even the house-born Seed to Skin skincare line used in the spa.
The thirteenth-century villa and its outbuildings hold a small collection of suites layered with antiques, frescoed ceilings, freestanding baths and private gardens; the atmosphere is closer to staying at a supremely run private manor than a conventional hotel. Grounds unfold through sculpted formal gardens into meadows and woodland, with a long pool overlooking the Valle Serena.
Food is the estate's heartbeat: the fine-dining room, Saporium, showcases the farm's produce in inventive tasting menus, while the trattoria keeps things rustic. Cooking courses, foraging and artisan workshops fill days without ever leaving the property. Siena is under an hour away, but Borgo Santo Pietro is best treated as the destination itself.
Around 20 suites across the villa and estate cottages, individually dressed with antiques, frescoes and garden terraces.
Saporium for farm-to-table tasting menus, a rustic trattoria among the vines, and cookery classes in the estate kitchens.
An estate spa using the house Seed to Skin line, a valley-view pool and therapies rooted in the property's healing history.
The Browntravels Verdict
The most personal of Tuscany's country estates—a place for couples to settle in, eat wonderfully and barely move.
