Casa Palopó

Casa Palopó began as a private villa on the hillside above Santa Catarina Palopó, and it keeps that character: a boldly coloured house layered with Guatemalan folk art, contemporary paintings and textiles, where every window frames Lake Atitlán and the three volcanoes—Tolimán, Atitlán and San Pedro—that rise from its far shore. Aldous Huxley famously compared the lake to Como with added drama; from Casa Palopó's terraces the comparison feels understated.

The main house holds a handful of individually decorated rooms, while a private villa higher up the hill adds suites, its own pool and full staff for buyouts. Interiors mix cobalt walls, carved saints and modern art with fireplaces for the cool highland evenings. The lake-facing infinity pool and the terrace restaurant, serving contemporary Guatemalan cooking built on lake fish, highland vegetables and local coffee, are the twin anchors of a stay.

Days revolve around the water: boat trips to the weaving villages of San Juan and Santiago Atitlán, hikes on the caldera rim, or simply watching the light change from a deck chair. The hotel's community ties run deep—its foundation helped paint the village's houses in Maya patterns—and service is warm and unscripted. As a base for Atitlán done properly, nothing on the lake matches it.
