An 18th-century villa above Lake Como transformed by its owning family into a 24-suite masterpiece of Italian craft, gardens and joyous hospitality.
Passalacqua is what happens when an Italian hoteliering family pours generations of taste into a single villa. The 1787 mansion at Moltrasio—where Bellini composed and Napoleon's circle summered—reopened as a 24-suite hotel of almost reckless beauty: hand-painted ceilings, Murano chandeliers, embroidered linens and vintage Martinelli furniture, arranged with the confidence of a private home rather than the caution of a brand.
Seven acres of terraced gardens step down toward the water through cypress, jasmine and centuries-old magnolias, past a pool wrapped in striped cabanas that has become one of Europe's most photographed. Suites split between the villa proper, the more casual Palazz, and a converted stable block; no two repeat, and many keep original frescoes above thoroughly modern comforts.
What elevates Passalacqua beyond its looks is tone: house guests wander into the kitchen, aperitivi appear unbidden at sunset, and the young staff radiate genuine delight. Dinner might be lake fish under the pergola; mornings begin with a swim as ferries hum below. It is intimate, joyful and quite unlike the lake's grander dames—a new Italian classic.
