Vence, France — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
An Oetker Collection hilltop retreat above Vence, built on a former Templar commandery amid olive groves with views rolling down to the Mediterranean.
Château Saint-Martin occupies a site with a deep past: a medieval commandery of the Knights Templar crowned this hill above Vence, and fragments of its walls still stand in the gardens. The hotel that grew here in the twentieth century—sister to the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc—takes the form of a graceful Provençal manor set in around 14 hectares of olive groves, where the Riviera's heat softens into hill-country air and the sea glitters on the horizon.
Rooms and suites favour a light classical style with toile fabrics and tall windows over the grounds; a handful of stone villas amid the olives offer more privacy. The infinity pool, aligned with the coastal panorama, is one of the loveliest in the region, and the hotel's position makes an ideal base for the art towns of Vence, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the Fondation Maeght.
The kitchen pursues refined Riviera cooking that has earned Michelin recognition, served on a terrace where the view does half the work, while the spa—with its own garden and serious treatment programme—anchors the wellness case. For travellers who love the Côte d'Azur but not its summer crush, this is the coast from a wiser altitude.
Around 45 rooms, suites and olive-grove villas in light Provençal-classical style, most with terraces facing the sea on the horizon.
A refined Riviera restaurant with a Michelin-recognised kitchen and a panoramic terrace, plus a casual grill by the pool in summer.
A garden spa with a strong French skincare partnership, indoor treatments, and an infinity pool aligned to the coastal view.
The Browntravels Verdict
The Riviera without the crowds—hilltop serenity, art country and Eden-Roc pedigree in the hills above Vence.
