A baronial former bishop's palace in twelve acres above Belfast Lough, the grande dame of Northern Irish country hotels.
The Culloden began life in the 1870s as a palace for the Bishops of Down, built in Scottish baronial style from Scrabo stone on a slope above Belfast Lough. Today it is the flagship of the family-owned Hastings group and Northern Ireland's default choice for visiting dignitaries and touring celebrities, its twelve acres of gardens and woodland looking across the water to the County Antrim shore.
Inside, the register is traditional plush—chandeliers, antiques, deep carpets and a fine plasterwork ceiling in the Mitre restaurant—while bedrooms mix classic main-house grandeur with fresher garden-wing comfort, the best gazing down the lough. The Spa at Culloden adds a pool, thermal facilities and a full treatment menu, making the estate as viable for a restorative weekend as for a business stay.
The location is quietly strategic: Holywood's village restaurants are minutes away, Royal Belfast Golf Club sits close by with the championship links of Royal County Down under an hour south, and central Belfast is a 15-minute drive. Game of Thrones territory along the Causeway Coast makes an easy day trip. The Culloden delivers country-estate calm with a capital city in its back pocket.
Around 100 rooms and suites blending baronial main-house grandeur with garden-wing comfort; lough-view rooms are the ones to request.
The Mitre restaurant serves classical cooking beneath ornate plasterwork, with lighter meals and afternoon tea in the lounges and Cultra Inn.
The Spa at Culloden offers a pool, thermal experiences and extensive treatments overlooking the gardens.
The Browntravels Verdict
Northern Ireland's grande dame—lough views, spa comfort and Belfast within easy reach.
