Dama Rose Hotel

The Dama Rose stands on Shukri al-Quwatli Street in central Damascus, beside the Barada river and opposite the sweep of Umayyad Square's approaches. Built in the 1980s as Le Méridien and later renamed, it has operated continuously through Syria's hardest years, hosting the delegations, agencies and press corps that pass through the capital, and it remains one of the most functional large hotels in the country.

Expectations should be set accordingly: this is a solid, well-staffed institution rather than a luxury property in the international sense. Rooms are simple and clean, many with views towards Mount Qasioun rising behind the city, and the sizeable grounds hold an outdoor pool and tennis courts that give the hotel a campus-like ease unusual for its location. Restaurants serve Syrian and international menus, and the lobby café functions as an informal crossroads for the city's official visitors.

The old city—the Umayyad Mosque, the Souq al-Hamidiyya, the churches and houses of Bab Touma—lies a short drive east, and the National Museum is walkable. Travel to Syria involves serious practical and advisory considerations that visitors must weigh with current information; for those whose work or long-planned journeys bring them to Damascus, the Dama Rose offers a known, steady base.
