Gili Lankanfushi

Gili Lankanfushi wrote much of the modern Maldives playbook. Guests surrender their shoes on the transfer boat—'no news, no shoes' is the house creed—and arrive at an island where every villa stands over the lagoon, hand-built from sustainably sourced timber with thatched roofs, open-air bathrooms and rope-net loungers strung above the water. Nothing about it feels manufactured; the carpentry is the design statement.

Villas are among the most generous overwater dwellings anywhere, culminating in the Private Reserve—a vast standalone residence reached only by boat, long cited among the world's largest overwater villas. Each villa is assigned a 'Mr or Ms Friday' butler whose quietly omniscient service defines the stay. Sustainability is structural rather than cosmetic: an on-site marine biology team, coral-line restoration and an organic garden supplying the kitchens.

Days divide between the house reef, the dive centre and surf breaks nearby, with dinners moving from an overwater Japanese counter to wine-cellar tastings and tables set on sandbanks. The atmosphere is adult, hushed and deeply romantic. Two decades of imitators later, the original barefoot island still sets the standard for the atoll it helped make famous.
