Every Bond novel began at GoldenEye: Ian Fleming built the clifftop villa above Oracabessa Bay in 1946 and wrote all fourteen books here, naming his spy after the author of a Caribbean bird guide on his desk. Island Records founder Chris Blackwell—whose mother was part of Fleming's circle—acquired the estate and grew it into the flagship of his Island Outpost collection: not a conventional resort but a village of villas, cottages and lagoon-side huts scattered through tropical gardens around a private beach, a second beach, and a serpentine saltwater lagoon.

The style is barefoot bohemian rather than polished—outdoor showers walled in bamboo, bold Jamaican art, no fuss—and the property's soul is musical and literary at once: Fleming's original villa (bookable, with its own beach and staff) anchors one end, while the Bizot Bar's reggae evenings anchor the other. Guests paddle the lagoon between huts, snorkel the reef restored by the local fish sanctuary, and eat jerk and fresh fish at the Gazebo with toes in the sand.

FireFly, Noël Coward's hilltop house, and Ocho Rios' river falls are nearby, but GoldenEye's gravity keeps most guests inside its gardens. It is idiosyncratic by intent—those wanting marble lobbies should look to Montego Bay. For originality, story and Jamaican spirit per square metre, nowhere on the island touches it.
