A 1910 Art Nouveau palace on Lake Como's western shore, famous for its floating lake pool and views across to Bellagio.
The Grand Hotel Tremezzo opened in 1910 as a palace for the new age of leisure travel, and its apricot-and-cream Art Nouveau façade has faced Bellagio across the water ever since. Few hotels commit to joy quite so completely: the interiors are a saturated riot of reds and gilt, the terraces stacked with striped parasols, and the lake steamers still call at the jetty below.
The hotel's signature is its trio of pools, above all the orange-canopied water-on-the-water pool floating directly in the lake — one of the most photographed swimming spots in Europe. Behind the hotel, terraced gardens climb the hillside past a second pool and the T Spa, housed in a lakeside wing with treatments built around the setting's serenity. Villa Carlotta's botanical gardens are next door, and Bellagio is a short boat hop away.
Dining honours the great Milanese chef Gualtiero Marchesi, whose legacy shapes the flagship La Terrazza with its lake-length views, while easier options run from a beach-club grill to late drinks in the bar. Families are genuinely welcomed, which is not universal at this level on Como. The Tremezzo is the lake at its most exuberant.
