Hoshinoya Kyoto

The journey defines Hoshinoya Kyoto. Guests board a small wooden boat at Arashiyama's Togetsukyo Bridge and glide upriver between forested slopes until the retreat appears on the bank, a cluster of tiled pavilions that once formed a riverside villa where merchants entertained a century ago. By the time the boat touches the private jetty, the city has fallen entirely away, replaced by water, maple and birdsong.

The two dozen or so rooms are contemporary interpretations of the ryokan idiom: papered walls, low furniture, river-facing windows framed like scroll paintings, and details—hand-printed karakami wallpaper, local joinery—executed by Kyoto craftsmen. There is no reception desk in the conventional sense and little to do by design; the pleasures are incense workshops, riverside meditation, tea in the floating pavilion and watching the gorge change colour through the day.

Dinner is a serious kaiseki progression that draws on Kyoto's vegetable and seafood traditions, served in private dining rooms. Arashiyama's bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji temple are minutes downstream, best visited at dawn before the crowds. This is the most transporting stay in Kyoto—provided guests accept the seclusion, the stairs and the absence of conventional hotel amenities as the point rather than the price.
