Riviera Maya, Mexico — North America
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A former duchess's estate on Xpu-Ha beach turned fashion-crowd hideaway, all white minimalism, jungle gardens and barefoot exclusivity.
Hotel Esencia began life as an Italian duchess's private beach estate on Xpu-Ha—one of the Riviera Maya's finest and least developed strands—and it still behaves like a private home that happens to accept guests. Fifty acres of jungle garden buffer the white modernist main house from the road, and the aesthetic throughout is restrained to the point of defiance: white on white, local stone, statement art, no logos anywhere.
The fashion and film crowd adopted it early, drawn by the discretion and the sense of staying at a stylish friend's compound. Rooms, suites and villas are scattered between garden and beachfront, several with private pools; the newer beachfront suites are among Mexico's most covetable rooms. Service is young, warm and on first-name terms by day two.
The kitchen takes real pride in its ingredient sourcing—much of it from the hotel's own farm—across a beachfront grill and an Italian-leaning fine-dining room. A two-storey spa works with Mayan herbs and honey, and the twin pools and uncrowded beach set the daily rhythm. Tulum's scene is thirty minutes away, which regulars consider exactly the right distance.
Around 45 rooms, suites and villas in whitewashed minimalism across garden and beachfront; beachfront pool suites are the prize booking.
A beachfront seafood grill and an Italian-inflected dining room, both drawing heavily on the hotel's own farm and local fishermen.
A two-storey spa using Mayan herbs and honey rituals, twin garden pools and quiet yoga sessions facing the Caribbean.
The Browntravels Verdict
The Riviera Maya's chicest small hideaway—choose Esencia for barefoot polish and privacy over big-resort machinery.
