Hotel Imperial

The Imperial began as the Viennese palace of the Prince of Württemberg before being converted into a hotel for the 1873 World's Fair, and it has served as Austria's unofficial state guesthouse ever since—visiting royalty and heads of state have traditionally been lodged beneath its chandeliers. The building holds one of the Ringstrasse's great interiors: a royal staircase in marble, colossal mirrors and ceiling heights that make the ground floor feel like a wing of the Hofburg.

Rooms ascend in the old palace manner, grandest on the lower floors where princely apartments once spread; the signature suites come with butler service, a tradition the hotel maintains across its upper categories with unusual seriousness. Decoration is faithful Habsburg-era style—silk damask, portraits, parquet—executed with Viennese exactitude rather than theme-park excess.

Café Imperial is a proper Viennese institution for schnitzel and the hotel's own Imperial Torte, the house answer to the Sacher's more famous cake, while the restaurant and bar keep evenings formal and unhurried. The Musikverein stands directly opposite and the State Opera is minutes along the Ring, making this the natural base for Vienna's musical life. Few hotels anywhere feel this convincingly imperial.
