A Victorian baronial castle in the shadow of Ben Nevis, praised by Queen Victoria and long the Highlands' most refined retreat.
Built in 1863 as a baronial mansion near the ruins of the medieval fortress that shares its name, Inverlochy Castle sits in walled grounds beneath Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. Queen Victoria stayed in 1873 while touring the Highlands and recorded in her diary that she had never seen a lovelier or more romantic spot — a line the hotel has been able to quote, fairly, ever since.
As a hotel it pioneered Highland luxury, drawing statesmen and stars to a house that operates like a private estate: a great hall with a frescoed ceiling, drawing rooms warmed by fires, and seventeen or so rooms overlooking its own loch and rhododendron-filled grounds. The scale keeps things intimate; staff outnumber guests on many nights.
Dinner has long been the ritual centrepiece, served in panelled dining rooms with furniture presented by the King of Norway, and the kitchen's modern Scottish cooking draws on west-coast seafood and estate game. Beyond the gates lie Glen Nevis, Glencoe and the West Highland Railway's Jacobite steam run to Mallaig. Inverlochy is the Highlands distilled: romantic, remote-feeling and quietly grand.
