Jicaro Island Lodge

Jicaro occupies its own tiny island among the 365 isletas scattered off Granada's shore—debris of an ancient Mombacho eruption, now a maze of channels, birdlife and fishermen's islets on Lake Nicaragua. The lodge, a founding member of the Cayuga Collection's sustainability-led portfolio, arranges nine two-storey casitas among the trees, each built from reclaimed hardwood with louvred walls that open to lake breezes and views towards the Mombacho volcano.

The design is barefoot-smart rather than luxurious: no glass in the windows, no air conditioning needed under the canopy, rain showers and hammocks on private decks. Days are lake-paced—kayaking through the isletas at dawn, swimming from the deck or plunge pool, yoga on the open-air platform, and boat transfers into Granada whenever the colonial city calls. Birdwatchers tally herons, kingfishers and oropendolas without leaving breakfast.

Meals showcase Nicaraguan ingredients—lake fish, plantains, farm vegetables—in a set daily menu served at the water's edge, and the bar mixes Flor de Caña rums to sunset. Staff are drawn from surrounding communities and the operation's environmental credentials are substantive. Jicaro suits couples happy to trade televisions for birdsong; it is Nicaragua's most complete escape.
