Athens, Greece — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A 1930s landmark on Syntagma Square whose rooftop restaurant and penthouse pool look straight onto the floodlit Acropolis.
The King George has stood on Syntagma Square since the 1930s, an aristocratic neighbour to the Greek Parliament that hosted the mid-century's royalty and film stars during Athens' cosmopolitan golden age. Now part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, it retains the feel of a classical European town house—chandeliers, marble and antiques on a scale more intimate than most capital-city grand hotels.
Rooms favour a soft, classical elegance with silk fabrics and marble bathrooms, and the upper floors deliver the hotel's trump card: direct views over the rooftops to the Acropolis. That panorama culminates in the famous penthouse suite, whose private terrace pool facing the Parthenon is among the most photographed hotel amenities in Greece. The Plaka, Ermou shopping street and the museums are all within an easy walk.
The Tudor Hall restaurant on the seventh floor pairs refined Greek cooking with a terrace panorama of the Acropolis that makes every dinner an event. Guests also enjoy access to the amenities of the Grande Bretagne next door, including its celebrated spa. For classic Athens with front-row antiquity, the King George offers the grand-dame experience at a slightly gentler temperature than its famous neighbour.
Around 100 rooms and suites in classical style with marble bathrooms; Acropolis-view rooms and the penthouse with its private pool define the hotel.
Tudor Hall on the seventh floor for refined Greek cuisine with Acropolis views, plus an elegant lobby lounge for coffee and cocktails.
A fitness room in-house, with spa and pool privileges at the grand sister hotel adjoining on the square.
The Browntravels Verdict
Athens' most romantic classic address—book high, dine at Tudor Hall and let the Parthenon light the evening.
