Kviknes Hotel

The Kvikne family have kept a hotel on the Balestrand waterfront since 1877, and their white Swiss-chalet-style timber palace remains one of Norway's most photographed buildings, its dragestil balconies stacked above the deep blue of the Sognefjord — the longest and deepest of Norway's fjords. Kaiser Wilhelm II summered in these waters annually before 1914, and the landscape painters who colonised Balestrand in the nineteenth century left the village its enduring artistic streak.

The historic wooden building holds period salons filled with Norwegian romantic paintings and carved furniture accumulated over five generations, while a larger modern wing supplies most bedrooms, the best with balconies hung directly over the water. This is not cutting-edge luxury; it is heritage hospitality of a kind Norway does better than anywhere, priced accordingly.

The daily rhythm revolves around the fjord: express boats to Bergen and Flåm call at the pier outside, the Fjærland glacier arm and Vik's stave church are day trips, and the hotel's famous koldtbord buffet dinner remains a Norwegian institution.
