Le Gray, Beirut

Le Gray brought contemporary boutique style to downtown Beirut when Campbell Gray opened it in 2009 on Martyrs' Square, steps from the restored souks and the Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque's blue domes. Badly damaged in the 2020 port explosion, it undertook a long restoration and reopened its doors—an act of faith in the city centre that regulars greeted with real emotion.

The hotel's character is urbane and art-filled: a collection of contemporary Lebanese and international work runs through the corridors, and rooms are crisp and residential, in creams and dark timber, many facing the mosque, the mountains or the sea. The scale stays intimate, service personal, and the atmosphere closer to a private club than a convention address.

The rooftop remains the calling card—an infinity pool and bar-terraces with a 360-degree sweep from Mount Lebanon to the Mediterranean, among the best vantage points in the city. Dining moves between rooftop grills and all-day menus, and the bars fill with a fashionable downtown crowd at weekends. Gemmayzeh's nightlife and the National Museum are minutes away.
