Marbella, Spain — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
The 1954 original of the Golden Mile: Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe's garden village by the sea that invented Marbella as a resort.
Marbella's modern story begins here. Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened the Marbella Club in 1954 as a bolthole for European aristocracy and Hollywood passers-through, and the hotel's whitewashed, low-rise village of rooms, bungalows and villas amid subtropical gardens still sets the tone for the whole Golden Mile. Bougainvillaea, mature palms and Andalusian courtyards do the work that marble atriums do elsewhere.
The beach club remains one of Europe's most storied, its seafront pool and buffet lunch a ritual polished over decades, while the wider estate runs to a serious spa with a thalasso pool, a renowned kids' club in its own garden, tennis and padel, and riding at the hotel's equestrian centre in the hills behind. Golfers have the family's Golf Club Marbella links nearby, part of the property's long sporting tradition.
Rooms avoid uniformity—Andalusian prints, hand-painted tiles and garden terraces—while the villas, up to grand multi-bedroom scale, operate like private estates. The crowd is generational: grandparents who honeymooned here bringing grandchildren. Marbella's flashier scene glitters nearby for those who want it, but the Club's enduring appeal is that it predates, and politely ignores, all of it.
Around 130 rooms, suites, bungalows and villas scattered through subtropical gardens, with hand-painted tiles, private terraces and villa pools at the top end.
The famous beach-club buffet and grill, Andalusian and Mediterranean restaurants under the pines, and a summer pop-up scene across the gardens.
A substantial spa with thalassotherapy pool and Mediterranean treatments, plus tennis, padel and the hotel's own equestrian centre.
The Browntravels Verdict
Still the soul of Marbella—choose it for gardens, generational charm and the beach club that started everything.
