Sumba, Indonesia — Southeast Asia
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A wild-luxury village on remote Sumba where thatched villas, a famous left-hand wave and horses on the beach rewrite the resort formula.
An hour's flight east of Bali, Sumba is another Indonesia entirely—savannah hills, megalithic villages and an untamed coastline—and Nihi is its improbable flagship. The resort grew from a surf camp into a barefoot estate of thatched villas above a mile of empty beach, yet it kept the founding spirit: days here are built around the ocean, the horses that gallop the shoreline at dawn, and the island itself.
Villas are handcrafted from timber, stone and alang-alang thatch, most with private pools and wide decks facing the break. Nothing is corporate; furniture is carved, edges are softened, and the aesthetic sits closer to a castaway dream than a brand standard. The legendary wave out front is capped to a handful of surfers a day, a restriction that says much about the ethos.
Signature experiences define the stay: the spa safari trek to clifftop treatment huts, swimming with horses, visits to the foundation's community projects that the resort meaningfully funds. Dining is communal-leaning and ingredient-driven. Nihi is remote, unpolished in the best way, and utterly unlike anywhere else in Asia.
Around 28 thatched villas and multi-bedroom estates in carved timber and stone, most with private pools and decks overlooking the break.
Ocean-front communal tables, a boathouse grill and beach barbecues built around local fish, Sumbanese produce and long, social evenings.
The signature spa safari: a trek or horseback ride to clifftop bales for unlimited treatments, plus yoga decks above the beach.
The Browntravels Verdict
For travellers done with predictable island luxury, Nihi delivers wildness, purpose and romance in equal measure.
