Pacific Resort Aitutaki

Aitutaki's lagoon is routinely spoken of in the same breath as Bora Bora's—a vast triangle of gradated blues scattered with uninhabited motu—yet the Cook Islands have never pursued large-scale resort development, and Pacific Resort Aitutaki remains the country's most refined address. Just 27 bungalows, suites and villas occupy a low bluff and beachfront on the island's western side, built in a Polynesian vernacular of thatch, dark timber and local stone.

The register here is barefoot boutique rather than high-gloss: absolute beachfront bungalows open straight onto sand and sunset water, staff greet guests by name within a day, and the pace is set by the lagoon. Cruises run out to celebrated motu such as One Foot Island, where the sandbars at low tide produce the postcard images that made Aitutaki famous, and bonefishing, paddling and snorkelling fill the intervals.

Dining at the Rapae Bay restaurant leans on Pacific fish and tropical produce at tables angled to the sunset, with feet-in-sand options below. There is a small spa and pool, but no golf courses, kids' clubs or glassy overwater theatrics—the Cook Islands' appeal is their unhurried authenticity, and this resort is its most comfortable expression.
