Portsmouth, Dominica — Caribbean
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Architect-designed villas hidden in clifftop rainforest above two beaches on Dominica's northwest coast—the Nature Island's world-class flagship.
Secret Bay put Dominica on the luxury map by refusing to tame it. On a rainforest promontory above Portsmouth, its collection of architect-designed villas—sustainably built in tropical hardwoods to designs by Venezuelan architect Fruto Vivas and their successors—hides so completely in the canopy that the resort is nearly invisible from the sea. Each villa is a private world: plunge pool, full kitchen, open-air living decks and, in the newer clifftop residences, funicular access up the ridge, with the Caribbean glittering through the trees.
The resort's rhythm is built on privacy and nature. Two small beaches lie below, including the dramatic sea-cave-flanked Secret Beach; guided offerings run from rainforest hikes and river kayaking to snorkelling in volcanic bubble streams, and each guest has a dedicated villa host. Dining works estate-grown and island produce into daily menus at the treetop Zing Zing restaurant—Dominica's most refined table—or served privately in the villa.
Wellness leans deep, with treatments in an open-air treehouse spa pavilion and yoga above the canopy. Dominica itself is the excursion: boiling lakes, 365 rivers, whale watching offshore. This is not a beach-resort island, and Secret Bay is not a conventional resort—it is the Caribbean's most convincing marriage of wild nature and villa luxury, and it has the international awards to show for it.
Around 10 villas and clifftop residences in tropical hardwoods with plunge pools, kitchens, open-air decks and funicular access to the ridge-top.
Treetop tasting menus at Zing Zing, private in-villa chef experiences and provisions for villa kitchens from island growers.
An open-air treehouse spa pavilion, canopy yoga and guided river, reef and rainforest immersions.
The Browntravels Verdict
The Caribbean's great nature-luxury statement—villas in the canopy, wildness all around, service that misses nothing.
