Silk Road by Minyoun, Samarkand

Silk Road Samarkand is one of Central Asia's most ambitious tourism projects: an entire resort district raised on the eastern edge of the city around a Soviet-era rowing canal, with hotels, an eternal-city themed bazaar quarter, congress hall and gardens. The Silk Road by Minyoun is its five-star flagship, a long palace-like building whose glass and stone frontage runs beside the water, managed by the Chinese luxury group Minyoun with an eye on the region's new streams of travellers.

Inside, the scale is generous to a fault: a vast marble lobby beneath chandeliers, wide corridors, and rooms that count among Samarkand's largest, styled in a soft international-contemporary manner with Uzbek suzani-inspired accents. Canal-facing balconies watch rowers train on the water with the resort's gardens beyond. Facilities are the city's most complete—indoor and outdoor pools, a spa with hammam, and multiple restaurants spanning Uzbek plov ceremonies, Chinese and European menus.

The compromise is distance: Registan Square and the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum lie a fifteen-minute drive west, so the great monuments are excursions rather than strolls. In exchange, guests get space, quiet and resort amenities unavailable in the old city, plus the Eternal City complex's crafts and performances nearby.
