Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Treehouse suites suspended over the Mossman River on the edge of the Daintree, the world's oldest rainforest, twenty minutes from Port Douglas.
Silky Oaks Lodge occupies a rare threshold: the boundary of the Daintree, the oldest continuously surviving rainforest on earth, where the Mossman River runs clear and green over granite boulders. The lodge's treehouses are strung through the canopy above the water, connected by boardwalks, so that the soundtrack of a stay is river over rock and the extraordinary birdlife of tropical North Queensland.
A comprehensive renewal under Baillie Lodges, completed in 2021, brought the property firmly into the top tier. Treehouses now pair rainforest hardwoods and linen with deep bathtubs set before wall-of-glass river views, and the open-sided Treehouse Restaurant and bar cantilever over the water. Swimming happens two ways: in the billabong-style pool, or straight off the pontoon into the Mossman itself—an experience few luxury lodges anywhere can offer.
The Healing Waters Spa leans on the setting with treatments drawing from native botanicals, and guided walks cross the river into Mossman Gorge, where Kuku Yalanji guides interpret country their people have known for millennia. The Great Barrier Reef is a day trip from Port Douglas, making the lodge the natural base for the reef-and-rainforest double that defines this coast.
Around 40 treehouses in rainforest timber and linen, with hammocks, river or canopy outlooks and deep baths facing the glass.
The open-sided Treehouse Restaurant and bar above the river, serving tropical North Queensland produce; private riverbank dinners can be arranged.
Healing Waters Spa with native-botanical treatments, a billabong-style pool, riverside yoga and swimming in the Mossman itself.
The Browntravels Verdict
The definitive Daintree stay—canopy living and river swims done with real polish, and the reef within easy reach.
