An 18th-century white marble palace floating on Lake Pichola, reached by boat and still one of the most romantic arrivals in world travel.
Some hotels have settings; the Taj Lake Palace has a mirage. Built in 1746 as a royal summer retreat, the white marble palace appears to float on Lake Pichola, its walls rising sheer from the water with the Aravalli hills and City Palace as backdrop. Arrival is by private boat, greeted with parasols and rose petals—an entrance no contemporary designer could improve upon.
Within, lily-pond courtyards, cusped arches and mirrored mosaics preserve the palace atmosphere across a compact footprint. Rooms range from richly fabriced heritage chambers to grand suites where maharana-era ornament meets butler service; lake-facing rooms are essential, as sunset over the ghats is the property's daily masterpiece. Taj's staff bring warmth and evident pride in the building's story.
Dining is intimate by necessity—rooftop Indian fine dining with palace views, a small European room, and memorable private dinners on the lily pond or a restored royal barge.
