Manama, Bahrain — Middle East
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Bahrain's first true boutique hotel, an art-packed, adults-only bolthole beside the Manama souq with a rooftop pool over the old town.
The Merchant House brought something new to Bahrain when it opened in 2019: a genuinely boutique, adults-only hotel in the heart of downtown Manama, a few steps from the Bab Al Bahrain gateway and the lanes of the old souq. Created under the Campbell Gray banner, it takes the island's trading history as its theme and fills the building with an exuberant contemporary art collection—hundreds of works crowd the lounges, corridors and suites, making a stay feel like sleeping inside a private gallery.
All rooms are suites, generously sized and residential in feel, with kitchenettes, deep sofas and a warm, eclectic mix of mid-century and Middle Eastern pieces. The rooftop is the social heart: a plunge pool, bar and terraces looking across the low roofs of old Manama to the financial district's towers, best at sunset with the call to prayer drifting up from the souq.
Dining centres on the rooftop's Mediterranean-Levantine menus and a ground-floor café-lounge; the pearl-trade heritage sites, the souq's gold and spice lanes and the Bahrain National Museum are all at hand. The Merchant House suits travellers who prefer character and neighbourhood over beach-resort sprawl—the culture-first way to stay on the island.
46 art-filled suites with kitchenettes and residential lounges, mixing mid-century and Middle Eastern pieces.
Rooftop Mediterranean-Levantine dining and a café-lounge below, with the souq's traditional eateries outside the door.
A rooftop plunge pool, small spa treatment room and gym.
The Browntravels Verdict
The characterful way to do Bahrain—art, suites and the souq on foot, far from the beach-resort formula.
