The Nare

The Nare is a deliberate anachronism, and proudly so. Set above the dunes of Carne Beach on the unspoilt Roseland Peninsula, it champions a style of English seaside hotel-keeping most of the country abandoned decades ago: proper silver-service dinners, drawing rooms hung with maritime art, staff who remember returning families across generations, and a general absence of piped music or hurry.

Rooms are fresh, chintz-friendly and largely sea-facing, many with balconies or terraces angled at Gerrans Bay; families are welcomed with an ease that never disturbs the calm. Two restaurants split the mood—the formal dining room with its daily-changing menus and seafood trolleys, and the more relaxed Quarterdeck—while a proper Cornish cream tea on the lawn remains a fixture of any stay.

Facilities are broader than the traditional tone suggests: indoor and outdoor pools, a small spa, tennis, and the hotel's own launch offering coastal trips in season. The beach below is one of Cornwall's finest and rarely crowded, and the Roseland's lanes, gardens and the church at St Just make for gentle days out. The Nare is not chasing fashion, which is precisely why its devotees return every year.
