Placencia, Belize — North America
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Francis Ford Coppola's Balinese-built beach village on the Placencia peninsula, where thatched villas open straight onto Caribbean sand.
Turtle Inn is the seaside half of Francis Ford Coppola's Belize pairing, and it wears its founder's tastes openly: the thatched villas were crafted by Balinese artisans and shipped across the Pacific, their carved doors, open-air garden bathrooms and teak interiors giving the Caribbean shoreline an unexpected Indonesian accent. The resort sits on the sand at the northern edge of Placencia village, at the tip of a long peninsula of fishing settlements and barefoot bars in southern Belize.
Villas open directly to the beach or to garden paths a few steps behind it, each with shaded verandas, outdoor showers and deliberate disconnection—the atmosphere favours books and birdsong. Two pools, a dive shop and a seafront bar structure the days; the reef and its cayes lie a short boat ride out, with Laughing Bird Caye and whale-shark season off Gladden Spit among the region's draws, and the jungle rivers and Maya sites of Toledo inland.
Food leans Italian—wood-fired pizzas, house pastas, the family's own wines—alongside Belizean seafood, served between the beach and the garden restaurant. Guests often split stays with Blancaneaux Lodge, the Coppolas' mountain retreat, for a jungle-and-beach fortnight. Turtle Inn remains Placencia's most characterful stay: personal, handcrafted and unhurried.
Around 25 thatched cottages and villas with Balinese carving, teak interiors, garden showers and verandas on or near the sand.
Italian wood-fired cooking and Belizean seafood across beach and garden restaurants, poured with the Coppola family's Californian and Italian wines.
A thatched spa with Thai- and Balinese-influenced treatments, two pools and paddleboards off the beach.
The Browntravels Verdict
Belize's most characterful beach hideaway—handmade, personal and perfectly placed for reef and village alike.
