Vila Joya

Vila Joya began as a private seaside villa and never lost that character: a Moorish-inspired house of domes and arches set in gardens directly above the long sands of Praia da Galé, west of Albufeira. With only a few dozen rooms and suites, the property runs at the rhythm of a house party—aperitifs on the terrace as the Atlantic turns gold, and everything orbiting the evening's table.

That table is the point. Under Austrian chef Dieter Koschina the restaurant has held two Michelin stars for decades, one of the longest such runs in Iberia, drawing gastronomes across Europe for cooking that marries classical technique with Algarve seafood. The dining room and its clifftop terrace, facing straight out to sea, are among the most coveted seats in Portugal.

Rooms are individually decorated in a romantic, ornamental style—arched windows, hand-painted details, sea-facing balconies—while a small spa and garden pool fill the daylight hours, and the beach below stretches for walking in either direction. This is not a resort with programmes and kids' clubs; it is a gourmet retreat of deliberate intimacy, best treated as a two- or three-night indulgence built around dinner.
